State of the Denton Urban Forest: City of Denton Urban Tree Assessment Data

In 2016, the City of Denton completed its first and most exhaustive effort to examine the structure and value of Denton’s trees: the State of the Denton Urban Forest,” an Urban Tree Assessment Study. This study combined on-the-ground data collection with analysis of aerial imagery files to obtain the most accurate picture to date of Denton’s urban forest. Results of the land cover mapping task show that the City of Denton averages 30% tree canopy cover (22,540 acres out of 74,492), 45% was grass and open space (with 33,321 acres), and 14% was impervious (with 10,506 acres). Of the grass and open space, 32,609 acres have been identified as land that provides opportunity for addition tree canopy.
